Missions Committee Summary & Notes -- Feb 2018

Meeting opened with prayer at approximately 5:35pm. Missions Committee met on Feb 22nd to discuss updates and opportunities from the Wests as sponsored missionaries in Houston, Prison Ministry support, Sylvania Heights’ “Feed the Hungry” program, early planning for a 2018 “Ft Walton First” event, and several general budget details/focus areas. Adam Babcock chaired the meeting and the following members were present: Bruce Garner, Kathy Miller, Mike Thompson. -- Following telephone discussions with Brett West, we anticipate similar summer Mission Trip opportunities for 2018 as were available in 2017. Basically this means 4-7 day organized work plans at specific times of the summer, with church-based or personally-arranged housing for participants. Once available dates and costs are established they will be shared with the church for volunteer sign-up, including any Missions-budget support/sponsorship available. -- Information sent by Brett West was shared/discussed regarding the 2018 Houston Nations Church Planting Network Summer Intern program. This is an 8-week program (1 Jun-1 Aug) for young adults (17-25) with a structured ministry approach/plan. The committee agreed to offer this opportunity to church members and agreed to funding $750 of the $1500 cost for up to 2 interested young adults (from the Designated Missions Fund, per our 2018 budget plan). Details will be shared via email, church publications, and personal announcements in anticipation of the 1 May registration deadline. Since each attendee receives a $300 honorarium upon completion of the internship the cost shared by attendees would be $450 plus any personal/travel expenses. -- An opportunity to send pastoral staff or Missions Committee members to an Okaloosa County Jail Security Briefing/visit was discussed, but no interest was indicated for this specific event date. We will continue networking with POCs for potential future dates/interest. The committee also agreed to further research increased support needs for our local Prison Bible Study group which is led by Sharon Hamilton. Following discussion with Sharon we will help support and publicize the tasks/needs and recruit additional “graders” for this ministry area. Our final discussion on Prison Ministry efforts included the re-statement of our support for the annual Good News Jail & Prison Ministry dinner typically held in April/May. We will sponsor a table once again using our 2018 budgeted funds. -- In an effort to respond “directly” and with “actionable” local Missions support, the committee agreed to share information and gauge church interest in supporting the Sylvania Heights First Baptist Church Feeding Program. This program feeds 50-75 people every Thursday and every 2nd Saturday at their Lovejoy Road location. We will publicize information during March and coordinate volunteers for a selected date in May, with success and interest to allow more participation. Funds will be provided via the Local/Community Missions budget as well as the Designated Fund if needed. Our intent is to generate interest for direct action and hands-on involvement as we seek to share God’s Word with our local community. -- Committee members agreed on pursuit and planning initiation for a 2018 “Ft Walton First” effort. The details of that event remain in planning but are projected to take place on/about the September timeframe with scope of support and overall organization TBD pending church interest and support. -- Two new (2018 budget-approved) Missionary support donations were discussed and committee members agreed to provide direct contact information so that details regarding payments and prayer efforts could be provided. Additional information on these missionary efforts will be included on the Missions section of the church web page (FBCFWB.org). The next planned Missions Committee meeting is anticipated for the early April timeframe. Meeting closed with prayer at approximately 6:35pm.

Current Mission Opportunities

Woman's Missionary Union (WMU) is a missions organization that has educated and involved generations upon generations in Christian missions. Their purpose—to challenge Christian believers to understand and be radically involved in the mission of God—is accomplished through  age-level missions organizations, hands-on missions opportunities, and additional resources produced by WMU. They believe missions is a lifestyle and provide missions education resources for all age-levels. See more info at the following

Backpack Meal program

We continue to partner with Food For Thought into the 2017-2018 school year program! Meals are pre-packed and delivered to Bruner Middle School as part of our sponsorship, and we have successfully increased the number of meals provided as part of our Food For Thought partnership and thanks to our wonderful team of volunteers! If you are interested in helping, please contact the church (243-3163).

Crop Drop 2017: This annual event distributed last-from-the-field produce from all over the SE region to those who are in need locally. Thanks to the local organizers and for our volunteers who picked up and delivered over 200 bags of sweet potatoes to Opportunity Place. Click HERE for some photos and join us next year for an even bigger event (one of the produce trucks broke down and couldn't deliver this year).
